Xiaomi Mi 8: First Camera Samples
Xiaomi's Mi 8 is the 2018 flagship smartphone of the Chinese tech firm. Like most flagship devices, the handset is loaded with really good camera specs.
Really good dual cameras? |
DxOMark even gave it a massive score of 99 total points. That score is on par with the Galaxy S9+ by Samsung. It is even better than the Google Pixel 2 on paper. Only the P20 Pro, HTC U12, and P20 are higher than the Mi 8 at DxOMark.
20MP for selfies! |
How did Xiaomi do it? They equipped it with a 12MP f/1.8 Sony IMX363 sensor and another 12MP f/2.4 Samsung S5K3M3 sensor at the back. The primary Sony sensor is the one with wide-angle lens while the other Samsung sensor is for telephoto
They also added Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS, AF, AI, and LED flash.
For selfies, it goes with a 20MP f/2.0 sensor.
Both the back cameras and the single selfie cameras are AI-assisted. The AI can detect 206 scenes and adjust the settings automatically (in real time) to improve/enhance overall photo quality.
Intriguing right? Here are some of our first few shots taken by the Mi 8. Have a look!

Most of the initial output we got are close to top notch for a smartphone. Autofocus is fast and we like that it has accurate exposure, contrast, and color reproduction.
Dynamic range on daylight and indoor shots are really good. It can also produce bokeh shots with close to natural looking edges.
When the AI is on, it can accurately detect most of the scenes we tried to apply the proper camera settings automatically. It is still a work in progress though. Why? There are times where it will make some of your shots oversaturated. There are also times where the images would lack in color when the AI is on.
To my eyes, it is close to the quality of some pricier flagships like the Galaxy S9+, and P20 Pro. It can also give other high-end phones like the Xperia XZ2 and LG G6 a run for its money.
But, we expected a bit out of it. Daylight shots are amazing. But our Nova 3 is a step ahead of it in lowlight. In lowlight, performance is a bit inconsistent. Dynamic range is lesser as well.
The selfie camera of this phone is the best on a Xiaomi smartphone yet. It can produce crisps selfies with good colors and nice overall quality.
Overall, it is quite impressive.
We will cover all its camera tricks in our full review.
Stay tuned!
